Each plant starts in a plug — a small cylinder of sphagnum peat wrapped in a biodegradable paper sleeve. The sleeve holds the peat together and breaks down naturally with the roots, so there’s no plastic pot to remove or throw away.

Two seeds are placed into each plug. The seeds are pelleted — coated in a thin layer of clay — so they’re uniform enough for a machine to place precisely. After seeding, the tray is watered lightly to anchor the seeds in place.

Seeded trays move into a climate-controlled germination room, stacked vertically on automated racks to maximize space. The plugs are thoroughly irrigated to kick off germination, then kept moist with frequent, short misting cycles — typically every 15 to 30 minutes. Sensors monitor temperature and humidity so the schedule adjusts automatically.

Once germinated, plants spend about 14 days in the high-density nursery — gutters packed close together while the seedlings are still small. You might notice a pink glow here: the LED grow lights emit only red and blue wavelengths, which are the bands plants actually use for photosynthesis.

After 14 days in the nursery, a  transplanter picks each plug and moves it into a wider-spaced finishing gutter — about 3 inches between plants. This gives every plant room for its canopy to fully expand without crowding its neighbor.

The finishing gutters move slowly through the greenhouse bay — traveling from the transplant end toward the harvest end as the plants mature. Gutter spacing widens automatically along the way, so plants always have just enough room. After another 14 days, they reach the harvest end, ready to pick.
