We already know that fruits and veggies offer important nutrition to keep our bodies healthy. Now research is demonstrating something else we’ve believed for years: the more fruits and veggies you eat, the happier you’ll be.
Turns out that “happier” is actually measurable. Researchers at the University of Warwick (UK) and Dartmouth College (NH, USA) looked at the eating habits of about 80,000 people living in the UK and compared their consumption of fresh produce to their life satisfaction, mental wellbeing, health and happiness. The results: a direct relationship between happiness & mental health and the number of servings of fruits & veggies consumed, with a peak at 7 servings per day.
Another recent study among young adults found that eating fruit and veggies had a strong day-to-day relationship with positive mood — which wasn’t the case for other foods like cookies, potato chips and muffins. (Sorry.)
And when you choose organic produce, you’re avoiding synthetic chemicals and supporting food production systems that help make our planet healthier, too.
So use that knowledge on your own plate: have some organic fruit at breakfast, a lovely crisp organic salad for lunch, maybe some delicious sautéed organic veggies with dinner. Now you’re giving your body and your mind a whole world of reasons to feel good!
